BARKAA doesn’t just project strength and defiance—she backs it up with every fierce lyric she spits. Celebrating Blak pride and womanhood with impressive swagger, the Malyangapa and Barkindji rapper born Chloe Quayle has been big-upping her sisters since her debut 2020 single, “For My Tittas.” She also gave an urgent Australian voice to the Black Lives Matter movement with the same year’s “OUR Lives Matter,” before guesting on DOBBY’s protest anthem “I Can’t Breathe” mere weeks later. BARKAA is just as impactful when rebelling against the patriarchy, monarchy, and colonization on 2021’s “Blak Matriarchy.” Named for the Barkindji word for the Darling River, the Sydney MC has also teamed up with fellow First Nations acts like Electric Fields and Kobie Dee to share their culture far and wide. All along, she has kept her voice loud for her fellow women especially, telling her tittas (sisters) to come to the front on the striking “We Up.” When she turns her focus to the haters and announces, “You ain’t bringing me down again,” you had better believe she means it.
