Dire Straits broke out to become one of the world’s biggest acts in 1985 via Brothers In Arms. And whether the band was trading screen time with animated working stiffs on the wickedly satirical “Money for Nothing” or with fun sports footage on the poppy, perky “Walk of Life,” the videos for the album’s blockbuster hits reflected the songs’ excitement and wit in equal amounts. It was just as compelling to watch the group at the beginning, when its debut single, the 1979 smash “Sultans of Swing,” became an instant rock classic, and newly minted guitar hero Mark Knopfler worked his six-string sorcery on the straight performance shots that made up the video. And watching Dire Straits captivate the masses from the legendary Live Aid stage at Wembley is like viewing a video tutorial on how to be a rock star.
