A defining rock band of the TRL era, the Orange County, CA, quartet Lit split the difference between pop-punk and radio-ready alt-rock, sporting a distinctive lounge-lizard aesthetic. After performing under different monikers, the band solidified in 1995, releasing its debut album, Tripping the Light Fantastic, two years later. The record showcased Lit’s grunge roots yet betrayed pop prowess; soon afterward, the group landed a major-label deal. On its 1999 RCA debut, A Place In The Sun, Lit embraced melodic earworms and shiny pop-punk guitar textures, logging three hits (most notably, the rock chart-topper “My Own Worst Enemy,” which became a teen-comedy soundtrack favorite). Atomic, released in 2001, operated in the same stylistic space as Place, yielding the hit “Lipstick and Bruises.” In the late 2010s, the group moved toward experimenting with country music (“Good Problem to Have”).
