Marshall Jefferson didn’t invent house music, but his name is synonymous with the genre’s early years, thanks to his 1986 piano-house classic, “Move Your Body,” billed upon its release as “The House Music Anthem.” Born in 1959, the Chicago native grew up on bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, then discovered house via local DJs like the Hot Mix 5 and Jesse Saunders. Where his peers were inspired by disco, Jefferson was influenced by psychedelic rock, which might explain the muscular drums and head-spinning atmospheres of early records he produced under names like Virgo, Jungle Wonz, and On the House, both solo and alongside influential Chicago DJ Ron Hardy. He went on to produce crossover stars Ten City and has continued to produce timeless house anthems, many of them infused with the pumping piano chords that made his early hits so distinctive.
