Emma Donovan was born into a family with renowned musical heritage—the Gumbaynggirr and Yamatji artist has been performing with her mother, uncles, and grandparents since childhood, and has since become one of Australia’s most acclaimed soul singers. Her 2026 album Take Me to the River sees Donovan reinterpret songs from some of the most iconic Black singers in history, including “Wash My Soul in the River’s Flow,” written by artist and activist Archie Roach, who passed away in 2022. It’s a warm, bright, heartfelt rendition, with a bluesy rhythm, gospel backing vocals, and Donovan’s proud, powerful voice soaring overhead. It’s a beautiful tribute both to the legendary artist himself and to Donovan’s close personal and musical connection with Roach, who had known Donovan’s family since she was a child. The pair would go on to collaborate many times across numerous projects and performances, as well as activism for First Nations rights and communities. Listen to “Wash My Soul in the River’s Flow” on FIRST, the playlist showcasing the best, freshest music from First Nations artists across Australia. It’s curated and updated every month by Wiradjuri original Jaja Dare—if you hear something you like, add it to your library. The artwork was created in collaboration with Kamilaroi artist Reko Rennie. Apple acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, culture, and community. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.
