Generation X introduced us to one of the most famous sneers in rock. In the mid-'70s, William Broad ran with the Sex Pistols' infamous Bromley Contingent of super fans; as frontman of Generation X, he rechristened himself Billy Idol and made Pistols-style punk more palatable through raucous yet irresistibly melodic rave-ups (“Kleenex,” “Wild Youth”) and power-popped John Lennon covers (“Gimme Some Truth”). Following a breakup and rebranding as Gen X, Idol blazed the path to his subsequent solo success with the anthemic New Wave of “Untouchables” and an early test drive of future ‘80s-rock classic “Dancing with Myself.”
