The Clarinet
Playlist - 60 Songs
Appearing in the early 18th century as the next generation in the evolution of the chalumeau, the clarinet is now employed in many different genres of music, from classical to jazz, taking in bands as well as folk music like klezmer. In classical music, its mellow, almost human sound made it a favorite of such composers as Mozart, Weber, and Brahms, all inspired by outstanding players. Sitting at the center of the modern symphony orchestra, the clarinet not only adds warmth to the woodwind section but often emerges to glorious effect as a solo voice in its own right (Brahms’ Third Symphony is a wonderful example).
