The Mahotella Queens have been an institution in South African music since the '60s. Whether on their own or in combination with the delightfully gruff-voiced icon Mahlathini, they helped to turn township jive into a pop treat for the entire world to dance to. Interspersed with bits of spoken-word dialogue, the trio's exuberantly harmonious chants make no distinction between entertainment and social commentary. Now in their seventies, Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Mbadu, and Amanda Nkosi still deliver with youthful joy and positive purpose.
