This under-appreciated trumpeter had the respect of virtually every jazz camp during the controversy-strewn ‘60s. Miles dug Woody; Eric Dolphy recorded with him, too. In the ‘70s, Shaw avoided the turn toward fusion, continuing to let his supple tone carry him through a series of different groups. (One adventurous date found him playing with Anthony Braxton and Muhal Richard Abrams.)
