Dillon was an anomaly when she first appeared on BPitch Control in 2011: Ellen Allien’s label was known as a cornerstone of Berlin’s techno scene, yet this singer-songwriter’s cracking voice telegraphed not industrial strength but human fragility. Born in São Paulo and raised in Cologne, Dillon (a.k.a. Dominique Dillon de Byington) has always forged her own path. She started posting bedroom performances online and fashioned early hit “Thirteen Thirtyfive” by writing new lyrics to a partial cover of Jens Lekman’s “Pocketful of Money.” By her 2011 debut LP, This Silence Kills, she had perfected a ghostly, goth-influenced style that blended piano melodies and atmospheric electronics. She has experimented with her sound, first emphasizing electronics and then acoustic instruments. On 2022’s 6abotage, she delved deeper than ever into the shape-shifting dimensions of her expressive voice, the essential feature of her unique musical identity.
