Every Lunar New Year is like a weeklong party at ØZI’s house. “My mum invites all their friends,” the rapper/singer/producer tells Apple Music. “So every day there’d be some of my dad’s friends, my mum’s friends, and my friends.” With all he’s got to celebrate, he can use the whole week. The LA-born, Taipei-raised artist has spent the year winning awards, releasing hit collaborations, and scoring fashion endorsements. That string of successes inspired the playlist he created for Apple Music. “The songs that reflect my idea of Lunar New Year have to do with money,” he says. “And the first song that comes to mind is ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’ (Good Fortune and Wealth).” He’s also picked Cardi B’s “Money” and China Mac’s “Red Money,” among others. “It’s the kind of music that when you hear it, you’ll feel happy and want to hang with your friends,” he explains. “Everyone is on holiday, so we can party until daybreak. No matter if it’s playing cards or just eating, it’s a chance for everybody to get together and for my closest friends to connect.” ØZI’s holiday blessing is a Chinese portmanteau. “If I had to choose one Chinese character for a blessing, it’s one that brings wealth and treasure together, meaning ‘attract wealth and find fortune.’ I'm choosing this because I want to make money!”
