Chet Faker came out of nowhere in 2012, when Melbourne’s Nick Murphy made waves overnight (and overseas) via his sleepy recording alias. Mingling nostalgic R&B with tousled electronics and his scruffy rasp, he turned Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” into a meditative trance. Then came “Drop the Game,” a 2013 teamup with Sydney producer Flume that went platinum in Australia and ushered in a more expressive range of singing for Murphy. But even those early landmarks didn’t foretell the full bloom of ubiquity and acclaim for his 2014 debut album. Built on Glass topped the Australian charts and saw three songs rank highly on triple j’s Hottest 100 poll, including the electro-soul torch song “Talk Is Cheap” in the top spot. Murphy followed it up with a full-blown dance collab with English DJ Marcus Marr on 2015’s “The Trouble with Us,” before switching to his given name for his releases in the second half of the decade. But by 2020’s gospel-shaded “Low,” he had reclaimed the Chet Faker persona for a new era and set about rekindling warm, body-moving romance on tracks like 2023’s “Something Like This.”
