Hailing from the same Blue Mountains music scene that gave us Hermitude and his own early group Down Under Beats Crew, Ryan Leaf deepens the art of post-millennial conscious rap as Dialectrix. On early cuts like 2008’s “Outcast”—helmed by Hermitude’s El Gusto, with feisty scratching from DJ 2Buck—Leaf made a strong case for the potency of local rap. Choosing the right teamups definitely helped: in-demand producer Plutonic Lab lent a playful bounce to 2010’s “Whut!” from the second Dialectrix album.
