There’s something almost contradictory about Mabiland. She was born in 1995—also the title of her debut album—which marks her out as a younger millennial. But it was listening to legends from before her time, like Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Louis Armstrong, that inspired her to write her own songs, with lyrics that show a wisdom beyond her years. While blues and soul comprise the backbone of her music, the versatile Colombian also channels ’90s R&B (“El Club de la Pelea”), hip-hop (“Mala Fama”) and funk (“Desahogo”).
