Before his untimely passing in 2017, Lil Peep led the charge for a new vanguard of songwriters who blend rap and rock into something that doesn't quite fit into either box. With a delivery that mixes singing and rapping, the artist born as Gustav Åhr took cues from trap and drill music just as much as alternative rock: on “Beamer Boy”, he channels Chief Keef fronting an emo band. Although he inspired countless imitators with his angst-ridden lyrics and melancholy guitar chords, many can't convey emotion as honestly as he does: with fellow GothBoiClique member Lil Tracy, he captures the rawness of fresh heartbreak on “Awful Things”.
