Hatchie Essentials

Harriette Pilbeam cut her teeth playing in jangly Brisbane bands like Go Violets and Babaganouj, but she came into her own making sensitive, shimmering dream pop as Hatchie. Her earliest missives evoked the soothing, radio-friendly sounds of ’90s acts like The Sundays and The Cranberries, while adding a bit more shoegaze to the equation: Her 2017 single “Sure” echoes its lyrical uncertainty with miragelike washes and a slow, wobbly chorus that only builds in layers. Pilbeam’s yearning vocals and poignant self-reflection are consistent hallmarks of Hatchie’s discography, but the project’s production and songwriting have leveled up with each new album. The more expansive sound on 2019’s “Obsessed” yields pinging synths, fluttering beats, and subtle melodic riches, whereas 2022’s “Quicksand”—co-written with and produced by Grammy winner Dan Nigro—leans into nostalgic dance pop. And on 2025’s “Only One Laughing,” Pilbeam’s soft-focus dreamscape remains as inviting as ever.
