A veteran of Los Angeles' Low End Theory club night, Nosaj Thing, a.k.a. Jason Chung, spins shuffling hip-hop rhythms and vivid electronic textures into a low-key, psychedelic sound he calls simply "beat music." Like fellow Angeleno Flying Lotus, he thrives on hybrids, and his spring-loaded beats and spacious backdrops send guest vocalists, including Chance the Rapper, Toro y Moi and Kendrick Lamar, soaring through coloured clouds. But Chung's music doesn't require singers to connect emotionally: Between their lumbering grooves and sparkling synths, his instrumentals have character to spare.
