“I just really wanted to simplify the whole thing,” Great Gable vocalist/guitarist Alex Whiteman told Apple Music while unpacking their 2024 album Small Fry. “There’s nothing too complicated.” To be fair, the Perth band’s music has always felt fairly streamlined from the outside. Their breakthrough 2016 single “Drift” was pleasantly beachy in the way that coastal Aussie bands do so well, with Whiteman’s singing growing openly expressive. Co-produced by celebrated solo artist Matt Corby, 2020’s “All My Friends” rode along on perky pacing and chiming melodies, nodding to familiar touchstones of both American and British indie rock. The band’s romantic streak shone through equally on 2022’s “Our Love”—released a year before the departure of drummer and frequent co-writer Callum Guy—and 2024’s “Best Friend,”A an ode to Whiteman’s partner. And on 2024’s especially upbeat “Hometown,” Whiteman turned that affectionate approach to his seaside childhood in Bunbury. Like so much of the Great Gable songbook, it sees the bandleader’s signature sincerity buoyed and burnished by effervescent, jangling guitars.
