Originally started as an anonymous side project to his guitar work in popular alt-metal act Ocean Grove, Running Touch has since grown into a rich seam of mellow yet clubby R&B for Melbourne singer-songwriter and producer Matthew Kopp. Upon his 2015 debut with the smoldering ballad “This Is Just to Say,” it was easy to hear the lineage of Chet Faker and The Weeknd in Kopp’s work. But he wasted no time in carving out his own niche, breaking out properly in Australia with the platinum-selling “My Hands” and “When I’m Around You” in 2018 and 2019, respectively. His quiet, brooding approach to romance proves a perfect fit with his stripped-back arrangements and late-night vibes, and that same methodology has served him well during collabs with Hayden James, Paraleven, Durante, and Jerro. Kopp’s long-gestating 2022 debut album Carmine added a pulsing, cinematic sheen on tracks like “Juno” and “Ceilings,” while 2024’s “I Can’t Wait All Night” saw his feathery vocals turning inward once again. The same year’s “Lost” struck the perfect balance between sharp dance prompts and soul-searching vocal softness, with Kopp continuing to evolve his nuanced sound.
