Exploding out of the late-'80s British dance-rock scene known as Madchester, the Happy Mondays took the indie world by storm, injecting their alternative sound with a jazz- and funk-influenced dance beat. The group first caught the attention of legendary impresario Tony Wilson, who signed them to Factory Records and oversaw their debut release, 1986's Forty Five E.P.. Several albums followed, including the acclaimed Bummed in 1988 and Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches in 1990. Throughout their four distinct lineups, the group have remained active in the studio and on stage.
