Within the space of a few years, singer/guitarist Dougy Mandagi went from busking on the streets of Melbourne to belting out a multicountry platinum hit. That would be “Sweet Disposition,” the U2-esque anthem that made The Temper Trap’s name overnight in late 2008. It also climbed halfway up the UK Top 10—neatly coinciding with the band’s relocation to London—and flourished through TV and movie licensing, all while enshrining the debut album Conditions as an of-the-moment indie-rock essential. Following the requisite marathon touring, The Temper Trap proved that their early success was no fluke, thanks to such dreamily earnest outings as “Trembling Hands” and “Need Your Love” from their self-titled second album in 2012. The 2016 single “Fall Together” leaned into the bubbling electronics they had flirted with previously, whether via remixes or the odd DJ Shadow collab. Yet, the arena-sized scope of that first single still proved alive and well on “Thick as Thieves,” the title track of the band’s 2016 third album. Since then, The Temper Trap have reconvened sporadically while their songs continue to find new generations of fans: in July 2025, “Sweet Disposition” came in at No. 11 on triple j’s public poll of the best Australian songs of all time.
