“I’m blue” are probably the first two words fans think of when they hear Eiffel 65, but the Eurodance group—originally from Turin, Italy—did make music beyond their world-conquering hit “Blue (Da Ba Dee),” the eccentric and undeniably catchy song that was one of the biggest hits of both 1999 and 2000.
“Blue” was the lead single from the group’s debut album, Europop, so named for their efforts to craft a new genre out of trip-hop, techno, Italian dance music, and (of course) pop. “Too Much of Heaven,” a pioneering entry in the use of Auto-Tune, and “Move Your Body” became fixtures of clubs around the world even without the ubiquity of “Blue.” Later songs like “Lucky (In My Life)” and “Cosa resterà (In a Song)” brought the group back onto the European charts with a nearly unchanged mix of techno beats and highly processed vocal hooks and harmonies.
