Second only to The Who when it came to raucous mod-era rock, and rivaling any '60s band for memorable pop, the UK's The Small Faces burned through singles and albums in a brief burst of activity from 1965-69. They started out writing guitar rave-ups and finished by making psychedelic concept albums, but unlike some of their contemporaries, they never ditched the sunny hooks or abandoned their R&B roots. Frontman Steve Marriott split in '69 to launch Humble Pie, and with the addition of Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, The Small Faces became the Faces for an equally brief run of '70s smashes.
