This veteran fusion guitarist shows his command of the jazz repertoire on this live release from his Unity Band. Metheny delivers inspired lines behind tenor saxophonist Chris Potter’s rendition of “Cherokee.” Some of the guitarist’s recent compositions, like “Kin (<-->),” are part of the mix; a special treat is “Police People,” a deep cut that he composed (and first performed) in a collaborative project with the late saxophone icon Ornette Coleman. Whether playing with a clean tone or making his axe sound like an orchestra of synths, Metheny’s invention impresses throughout.
