For much of his career, Alex Chilton seemed to take delight in deliberately provoking his audience. This abrasive release swings wildly between primal rock mania and irritating self-indulgence. Chilton’s erratic vocal stylings are accentuated by quivery reverb and odd mixing, creating a disorienting effect. The album seems to juxtapose cover tunes with original material in a haphazard manner — unless, of course, the intention is to subvert pop music conventions or just simply have fun. A gleeful sort of madness lights up “My Rival,” “Hook or Crook,” the title tune and other psychobilly exercises. Chilton’s treatment of the Lonnie Mack hit “I’ve Had It” is messy but potent, as are similarly eccentric takes on Doug Kershaw’s “Alligator Man” and K.C. & The Sunshine Band’s “Boogie Shoes.” “No More the Moon Shines On Lorena” will likely test all but the most loyal fan’s patience. Sherbert is probably not the best entry point into the weird world of Alex Chilton. But for those prepared for some whacked-out excess, there are tasty nuggets to be found here.
