Rajko Müller had escapism on the brain when crafting Resort Island, the German producer’s first album since 2011’s Well Spent Youth. Turning a blind eye to the world’s problems was a dead-end strategy, he knew; however, he wondered, could there be value in the temporary experience of dance-floor disappearance? That philosophical quandary led him to create Resort Island, an album of euphoric house music that, nevertheless, harbors a sense of ambivalence beneath its warm synth pads and easygoing beats. While Isolée’s sound has changed considerably since his 1998 breakout hit, “Beau Mot Plage,” the slightly queasy minimalism of his earliest work still resonates in the slippery sound design of a track like “Rumour,” while the lush, soft textures of 2005’s We Are Monster reappear in the full-body embrace of tracks like “Pardon My French” and “Tender Date.” The dembow pulse of the opening “Coco’s Visa” paints a picture of tropical calm, but the moody loops of highlight “Modernation” suggest that there are clouds gathering on the horizon.
