First released in 1985, Tina Turner’s Ivor Novello-winning Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome theme “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” still resonates almost 40 years later—as Rita Ora’s take on the track for this Apple Music Home Session proves. “It’s one of my favorite songs,” Ora tells Apple Music. “The lyrics are powerful in their anti-war and anti-violence statement—and empowering in the way they call for us to be vigilant and visionary and search for all-encompassing freedom beyond every conceivable oppression.” With that message to carry, she opted for a more austere take than the original. “I wanted it to sound different and ensure the powerful lyrics and amazing melody shone through,” she says. “So I tried to lean into the acoustic sound, stripping the song down to its barest elements, and to sing it straight from the heart with raw and honest emotion. I’m a huge Tina Turner fan and we share the same birthday! If the zeitgeist ever knew a phoenix, it’s her.” Ora also took the opportunity to reinvent her 2023 single “You Only Love Me.” Even more intimate than the original, this version offers further reflection on her experiences with life and love during the early 2020s. “There is something about playing music in a small space that enables me to embrace my surroundings and channel this energy into my music,” she says. “A lot has changed over the past couple of years. I opened myself up to finding love again and entered a new phase of my life and career. With ‘You Only Love Me’ I wanted to capture the vulnerability I experienced during the early stages of this journey. There’s a lot of love, passion, and emotion pouring out of the new album [her third LP, due in 2023], and I can’t wait to share it with the world.”
