Drakeo the Ruler
THE UNDISPUTED TRUTH
Álbum · Hip-Hop/Rap · 2024
Though Drakeo the Ruler tragically lost his life on December 19, 2021, his influence on West Coast rap music (and rap music more generally) lives on. As recently as a few weeks before Drakeo’s estate dropped THE UNDISPUTED TRUTH in December 2024, his legacy was apparent on Kendrick Lamar’s GNX, which featured rappers who emerged in the late MC’s wake and even flows from K.Dot that alluded to Drakeo’s “nervous music” flow. On THE UNDISPUTED TRUTH, Drakeo puts this vanguard spirit on tape one final time, showcasing the myriad ways he helped put Los Angeles rap back on the map. “Bop Bop Bleed Em,” which features Baby Smoove, is built around the deeply local lingo that Drakeo fans everywhere have adopted as their unofficial language, as is the track that follows, “Stalemate.” Elsewhere, “I’m the Reason” is haunting in its prophetic vision: “Lately, all I can think about is violence,” Drakeo spits. “I don’t know why you even think about fighting me/If the devil wears Prada, it's most likely me.”
