Album - Jazz, Music, Fusion, Rock, Rock & Roll
Despite all the attention paid to their lead singer Jim Morrison, every member of the Doors was an integral part of their sound. Essentially a trio behind Morrison, it was up to each member to fill in the space around the songs. Guitarist Robby Krieger threw in flamenco and jazz riffs, alongside some mean slide guitar and serious psychedelic solos. His 2010 solo album, Singularity, is a masterful collection of instrumental pieces that sound very much like what you might expect from an elder Krieger. Forty years hasn’t altered his attack or made him any less amazing. “Coffin Dodger” may be the heaviest piece on the album, full of breathtaking swoops into the jungle but the jazz-flamenco passions of “Russian Caravan,” “Event Horizon” and “Trane Running Late” are exemplary guitar pieces where lite-jazz is muted into a post-Doors universe. “Let It Slide,” “Solar Wind” and “House of Bees” could easily fit into Krieger’s former life. As it stands, they fit extremely well right here.
