Holcomb dives into upbeat tracks like “Fire and Dynamite” and “Steal My History” with real ferocity, spurred on by hard-crunching guitars and galloping drums. With “Miracles,” he delivers a visionary glimpse of everyday happiness that steadily rises in intensity. When wife Ellie Holcomb adds her voice to such tracks as “Live Forever” and “Someday,” the effect is similar to Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova’s tormented duets in the film Once. Holcomb’s songs have a spiritual dimension that only fully emerges at key moments, such as on the prayer-like ballad “Weight of the World.” Chasing Somebody manages to be tender and heroic at once, dashing off striking lyric phrases while keeping its musical thrust lean, clean and direct.
