The Sorrow
Album - Metal, Music, Rock
On their self-titled third album, the Sorrow delivers an unstintingly brutal outpouring of horrific yet heroic tunes. As on past releases, the twin lead-guitar assaults of Mathias Schlegel and Andreas Maser blaze away, while drummer Dominik Immler fires off kinetic blast beats and bassist Tobias Schedler anchors the sound with fluid rigor. Schlegel’s vocals combine larynx-searing screamo passages with melodic clean singing, with the ballad “Farewells” showing off the latter to striking effect. From the titanic flourishes of “Afflictions” through the hellbent desperation of “You Are My Nemesis” and the almost prog-rock expansiveness of “Reach for the Skies,” the album is a non-stop ride through volatile psychic terrain. If there’s a key track here, it’s “Grief Machine,” a sustained slice of riff-fueled pandemonium with undertones of classic ‘70s hard rock. First track to last, the Sorrow embrace pain and transmute it into pure, extreme-metal pleasure in this maniacally satisfying set.
