Bassist Quagero Imazawa was born in Ebetsu-shi Hokkaido, Japan. The grandson of composer and radical bamboo flutist Kozan Abe, Imazawa began playing the bass and studying composition in the early '80s. In 1990, he moved to Tokyo to work professionally as an instructor and a session player. During the early '90s, Imazawa played with musicians and experimenters such as Kazutoki Umezu and Otomo Yoshihide, and collaborated with dancers and photographers. In the mid-'90s, he began performing in Europe, and by 1996, Imazawa played his first solo shows in New York, at the Knitting Factory and other venues. Dubbed the bass futurist, Imazawa had toured the U.S. and Europe three times by the end of the '90s. In 1997, he performed with Atari Teenage Riot's Carl Crack at Berlin's industrial music festival Klang Kreig, and has played other festivals in Berlin and Sweden. Imazawa has collaborated with various European DJs, and with jazz artists Misako Kano and Jinmo. By 1999, Imazawa had three solo bass albums to his credit. ~ Joslyn Layne
