Iconic and trailblazing, Alisha Chinai remains the undisputed “Queen of Indipop”—a title earned through groundbreaking artistry and fearless cultural expression. Born in Ahmedabad, the young Sujata Chinai grew up immersed in music, listening to Ustad Ghulam Ali’s melodies while her mother played piano.
Chinai’s big break came when a legend of composition, Bappi Lahiri, discovered her talent and introduced her to Hindi film music in the early 1980s. Together they crafted disco-inflected anthems for films such as Dance Dance, Commando and Adventures of Tarzan, with Chinai providing playback vocals for Bollywood’s biggest stars including Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla.
But the singer had ambitions beyond her film playback role. Her 1985 debut album Jadoo marked the beginning, but the real watershed came with 1995’s Made in India, produced by Biddu. The title track became a cultural phenomenon, selling millions and establishing Alisha Chinai as a household name. Its celebration of Indian identity and its MTV-ready aesthetics proved that Indian pop could stand independently of film music and paved the way for an entire generation of artists.
