Not to be confused with other performers named Bob Davis including a jazz pianist and a R&B singer, this artist was an essential member of the Honeydreamers. This was a vocal quintet that was active roughly from the mid-'40s to through the late '50s, although from the group's name, it sounds more like an aggregation of dozing bees. Davis was certainly wide awake for this gig; he not only sang but created arrangements for the group and on some recordings is credited as its director. The Honeydreamers performed frequently on radio and were also sometimes part of popular bandleader Kay Kyser's entourage.
Chicago's nifty Vitaphone label, partially responsible for bringing the Harmonicats group to the listening public's attention, made some of the earlier recordings of the Honeydreamers. In the '50s the group would record for Fantasy on the West Coast, continuing to present a repertoire of sentimental entertainment from the Tin Pan Alley era. The RKO imprint created a retrospective collection in 1999 titled An Evening with the Honeydreamers.
