Dark Fortress are a German progressive black metal band. Initially a melodic black metal outfit, they independently released a cassette demo titled The Rebirth of the Dark Age in 1996. After honing their touring chops for several years, they released Tales from Eternal Dusk, their 2001 debut album. They followed two years later with Profane Genocidal Creations. 2004's Stab Wounds, produced by guitarist V. Satnura) broke through. The beginning of their transition to progressive black metal was 2006's Century Media debut Seance. Dark Fortress fully indulged prog on 2008's Eidolon, which established their name globally. Universally considered the band's masterpiece, Ylem appeared in 2010 to rapturous reviews and brisk sales. Venereal Dawn followed in 2014, and, at the dawn of the pandemic in 2020, they issued Spectres from the Old World. The band split in 2023. In 2025, Century Media released Anthems from Beyond the Grave: Live in Europe 2023 to commemorate their final tour.
