Cellist Erik Friedlander is a daring improviser and composer who straddles jazz, the avant-garde, experimental rock, and classical. He emerged in New York in the 1980s, recording with John Zorn and groups like Masada Trio and Bar Kokhba. He has also worked closely with Dave Douglas, Marty Ehrlich, and Myra Melford. His early albums, like 1995's Chimera and 1999's Topaz, showcase his inventive small-group style. He also released 2007's solo cello recording Block Ice & Propane, 2015's set of Oscar Pettiford cello compositions, Oscalypso, and 2018's A Queens' Firefly. Friedlander has scored for film, including 2017's Thoroughbreds and 2022's Baby Ruby. He has also played with artists like Elvis Costello, Courtney Love, John Vanderslice, and the Mountain Goats. He returned to his improvisational work with 2023's She Sees, followed in 2024 by both the quartet album Dirty Boxing with pianist Uri Caine and Floating City with vocalist Sara Serpa.
