Jill Sobule was a singer and songwriter whose bright melodies and witty lyrics were often used in service of serious themes such as gender identity, sexism, racism, eating disorders, faith, and depression. With an engaging fusion of modern folk and indie pop, she scored a hit with "I Kissed a Girl," a single from her second album, 1995's Jill Sobule. She also won airplay with "Supermodel," from the soundtrack to the hit film Clueless, but after her ambitious third LP, Happy Town, didn't repeat that success, she spent the rest of her career recording for indie labels, where she was given the creative freedom she needed. With 2009's California Years, she became one of the first artists to finance an album through crowdfunding. One of her final projects, F*ck 7th Grade, was an autobiographical performance piece about her journey from awkward adolescence to fearless adulthood. Jill Sobule died on May 1, 2025.
