New Zealand rock troupe Shihad infused a fiery brand of rock with industrial and punk for an inventive take on 1990s alternative rock. Formed in 1988, the band's debut, produced by Killing Joke's Jaz Coleman, appeared five years later and earned the band support slots with Pantera and Misery Loves Co. By the late-'90s, the act smoothed out the edges, opting for a more melodic, borderline shoegazer, pop-gilted approach. In 1999, the alteration paid off as THE GENERAL ELECTRIC met rave reviews, if somewhat tepid sales. The band relocated to Los Angeles and in the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks, the label concerned with the moniker's phonetic similarity to 'jihad,' the band was prodded to change its name to Pacifier.
