Manchester blues-rockers Stack Waddy formed in the 1960s under the name New Religion, but changed their moniker by the '70s, when they were signed to John Peel's Dandelion label. Their style was a raw, Captain Beefheart-like blend of blues and arty, angular rock. Between their barbed-wire sound and singer John Knaill's violent onstage antics, they can be seen as prefiguring punk rock by several years. They split up after two early-'70s albums, briefly reuniting with a different lineup shortly after, but never recording again.
