In the 1960s, it was tough going for any foreign pop-folk group to crack the US or UK charts. The Seekers were an outlier—in so many ways. Powered by irresistible harmonies and the ethereal soprano vocals of the late Judith Durham, the Melbourne-formed quartet was a global success story and became the first Australian group to achieve a top-five hit in the US, UK, and its homeland. The band’s versatility was at the heart of its appeal—investigate the mid-'60s imperial phase and you’ll find few artists moving so skillfully between delicate folk and radio-conquering pop. Global smashes including “I’ll Never Find Another You,” “The Carnival Is Over,” and “Georgy Girl” (all collaborations with Tom Springfield—Dusty’s brother) underline the catchiness and crossover appeal of a band that would lose Durham to a solo career in 1968 and, led by guitarist Keith Potger, shapeshift into The New Seekers a year later. Happily, though, the group’s classic line-up—including Durham and Potger—would reunite in 1992 and embark upon several world tours and studio albums together until Durham’s retirement in 2019.
