A soul singer's soul singer, Donny Hathaway possessed one of the sweetest voices in R&B. Starting in Chicago as a protégé of Curtis Mayfield, Hathaway released his debut album, Everything Is Everything, in 1970. His solo albums and singles were uniformly excellent, but it was only when recording classics like "Where is the Love" and "The Closer I Get To You" with Roberta Flack that he scored the pop hits he deserved. Hathaway's 1979 suicide at the age of 33 cut short one of the soul era's most promising careers.
