“My favorite genre is happy-sad,” DMA’S guitarist Johnny Took told Apple Music in 2023, “and there are a lot of happy-sad moments.” He was talking about the Sydney trio’s fourth album, How Many Dreams?, but that mingling of upbeat and downcast is present in much of their catalog. Observe their 2014 debut, “Delete,” a pleading call not to delete (or defeat) singer Tommy O’Dell’s object of affection that goes from sounding like a contemplative demo to a stadium-sized ballad. That track very much announced the band—which also includes lead guitarist Matt Mason—to the world, earning comparisons to Oasis and eventually going multiplatinum in Australia. DMA’S repeated that sales milestone with an unlikely successor: a tender acoustic rendering of Cher’s “Believe” recorded live in the studio for triple j’s Like a Version series in 2017. And while the Gallagher brothers would hang around as a cozy touchstone, other Manchester bands like The Stone Roses and New Order, respectively, resonated through 2019’s “Silver” and 2020’s “Life Is a Game of Changing.” Both were helmed by English producer Stuart Price (Madonna, Kylie Minogue), whose glossy commercial touch would also grace a few subsequent DMA’S sessions. That leveling up absolutely suits the trio, who sound right at home among synth-laced pop on 2023’s happy-sad sing-along “Everybody’s Saying Thursday’s the Weekend.”
