While Phil Ochs is mostly known as a folk singer—and his early live demo for the protest song “We Seek No Wider War” shows that's where he shined brightest—he also dabbled in pop and rock ‘n' roll. Ochs was a big admirer of Elvis Presley, and you can hear it in the upbeat acoustic thrum of “Pretty Smart On My Part.” The dramatic piano and gorgeous melody of “The Scorpion Departs, but Never Returns” sound almost Beatles-esque.
