Responsible for one of country music’s most beloved standards (and cheating songs), “Please Help Me, I’m Falling,” Hank Locklin was one of a number of country stars who found more success through the approachable Nashville Sound than the rough-and-tumble honky-tonk he started out with. His expressive tenor singing helped him stand out from the crowd of crooning baritones, especially once he made the move to RCA and started working with megaproducer Chet Atkins.
Their first major hit together, the not-quite-timeless wartime love song “Geisha Girl,” was followed by more than a dozen Top 40 country hits through the late 1950s and 1960s; “Please Help Me” brought him a dose of pop stardom and country music immortality, while the oft-covered “Send Me the Pillow You Dream On” showed his bona fides as a writer as well as a performer. His last major hit was an earnest ode to the then brand-new Country Music Hall of Fame, where his story would eventually be preserved and shared.
