Absorbing cues from jazz and soul, Japanese electronic artist Takuya Matsumoto transforms the simplest sounds into shape-shifting techno epics. He takes basic elements, ranging from a piano note or squelchy synths to split-second vocal samples, and recasts them to create alluring melodies. These he stretches and molds into slow-burning floor fillers, exemplified by cuts like "Jump Rope Music." Matsumoto takes his time releasing material, waiting until every element is just right before sharing the workings of his idiosyncratic inner world.
