Electronic Resistance

Dance music is political to the core; call it a politics of what's possible. Born at the intersection of communities of color—particularly Black artists in the Midwest and Northeast—and diverse elements of LGBTQ+ culture, house and techno embody the spirit of defiance. They were designed to bring people together in free expression, safe from judgment and sheltered from hostile forces. That’s still the lifeblood of dance music, and it surfaces in myriad different ways: the sass of ballroom house, the virtuosic moves of footwork, the meditative grace of classic dubstep. And even when electronic music isn’t explicitly commenting on the political issues of the day, its progressive history and utopian aims make it an ideal soundtrack for imagining—and effecting change for—a better world. This playlist is updated regularly, so if you hear a track that moves you, add it to your library.
