Jakarta indie rock trio Elephant Kind create watercolour paintings of sound—swirling, impressionistic and mesmeric. They debuted in 2013 and quickly gained a fan base who were won over by a long list of influences that touches on Bon Iver's shivery folk, Kings of Leon's firebrand rock and Arcade Fire's propulsive disco-indie. This is quietly powerful and potent guitar-and-keys-led rock 'n' roll, with singer Bam Mastro's warm vocals undulating between romantic falsettos and stormy crescendos. "It's not necessary to beat the ordinary", he sings on 2016's City J—but Elephant Kind do it anyway.
