This classically trained Austrian pianist recorded lots of great straight-ahead acoustic jazz before going electric in Weather Report. Hear him swing hard with saxophonist Yusef Lateef on "Revelation" in 1960 and with Ben Webster a few years later on the soulful "Frog Legs." Joined by strings, Zawinul also plays stirring gospel piano on "Lord, Lord, Lord."
