Led by guitarist/vocalist and primary songwriter Mike Scheidt, YOB have created some of doom metal's most crushing and compelling songs since their formation in Eugene, Oregon, in the mid-'90s. Over the years, their sprawling, Black Sabbath-inspired sound quickly grew more masterful and monolithic, often manifesting itself as colossal journeys that can extend beyond 20 minutes (Early tracks like “Catharsis” roll through movements that seem to stretch on into transcendental infinity.) The Great Cessation and Atma introduced themes of self-realization and Eastern philosophy, and, along with 2014's Clearing the Path to Ascend—perhaps their magnum opus—gave birth to some of YOB's most melodic and emotionally powerful songs, like “In Our Blood,” “The Lie That Is Sin,” and one of doom's greatest masterpieces, “Marrow.”
