Lyrics

It was a quarter to one and they were looking for fun just roving like a pack of dogs
Three men staring in the face of evil while the rest world is sawing logs
One man packing a switchblade
The other one nursing the Night Train
And the man that was driving, they called him Smokestack Lightning and he claimed he was the Devil's son
Come on now
Last ride on Devil's Elbow Bridge
They pulled up to the station, the jockey stepped out and man he couldn't believe his eyes
It was a 71 Newport about 30 feet long with flames painted up the side
He said"hey Mister, that's a real big car, just how many gallons per mile"
Man said" I don't know son cause the gauge done broke, I just fill it when I'm feeling wild but that trunk fits 21 bodies and that backseat has made a lot of young ladies mommy's" and then he smiled
Yeah he smiled
Last ride on Devil's Elbow Bridge
Last ride on Devil's Elbow
And the cops picked up the scent at about just Goshen Line
And when Lightning got him a review glimpse
He let that car unwind yeah!
Well the local boys they don't like strangers especially the kind that run
And they'd have chased that car all the way to the sunrise but the Dodge would never seen one
Corralled them into Plugtown line where You know there's no way out
That's when the cops slammed on the breaks and Lightning put the hammer down
He gave the Newport all it worth
And he thought he found freedom as he headed for Perth
But the law had plans to kill them
Because the bridge was out and nobody tell them
It was the last ride
The last ride yeah
Last ride on Devil's Elbow Bridge
Last ride on Devils Elbow
